It took ten innings but the Mavs claimed a 7-6 victory Saturday afternoon in Kokomo to earn their spot in the sectional championship. The Mavs (16-11) scored in each of the first four innings before the Bronchos battled back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth. Mav pitching would hold Jeff scoreless from that point forward setting the stage for late game heroics from the offense. Sammy Swank led off the top of the tenth with an infield single. Courtesy runner Rhett Clarkson then stole second. After two outs were recorded, Zayne Newgent ripped a 2-strike, 2-out triple to right field which scored Clarkson to push the Mavs back out in front. Swank followed by striking out the side in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win for the Mavs. Newgent, Jake Winger, Jonathan Riley and Mekyel Almond all collected two hits. Newgent and Aiden Riser each had two RBIs. Riser, Winger and Swank combined to strikeout fourteen Bronchos while issuing just three walks in the ten inning affair. The Mavs will play for the sectional championship Monday night at 6:00 pm once again at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
