The Mav connection to professional baseball is strong as four alums are either working in or playing heading into the 2025 season. Pat Murtaugh was part of the first graduating class at McCutcheon in 1976 and has worked in professional baseball for the last thirty seven years both in amateur and pro scouting. He is currently with the New York Yankees as a pro scout where he is involved with evaluating opposing organizations for potential trades. Class of 1999 graduate Nick McIntyre is entering his first year with the Miami Marlins. He serves as the Director of Baserunning for the entire Marlins organization. McIntyre spent the previous sixteen years as an assistant coach at the University of Toledo. After helping lead the Mavs to their first state championship in 1999, McIntyre went on to play at Purdue University where he was a 20th round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 2003. Jackson Smeltz is a 2018 Mav graduate and is entering his second season in the San Diego Padre organization as a left handed pitcher. Smeltz quickly moved up within the organization in 2024. He pitched at three levels while registering 30 strikeouts in 20.1 innings pitched. After his time as a Maverick, Smeltz pitched at Purdue University going 10-2 in three seasons for Boilers. He was a 10th round draft pick of the Padres in 2022. Class of 2020 graduate Brady Kas is entering his first year in the Colorado Rockies organization. Kas serves as a Minor League Technology Assistant where he oversees Trackman and BATS Video while also working with advance scouting and player development. Prior to joining the Rockies, Kas worked with the Baylor University baseball program as a graduate assistant after completing his undergraduate degree at IUPUI.
