The Mavs (10-0) scored in each of the first four innings Saturday to hold a 7-1 lead before withstanding a strong Zionsville rally to claim a 8-7 victory. The Mavs offensive execution was sharp early as Sage Adams and Riley Sands started the game with consecutive singles. After a wild pitch moved up both runners, Logan Marsell got the Mavs on the board with a sacrifice fly that brought home Adams. Jake Winger then drove in Sands with a single to left field. Mekyel Almond reached to start the second inning and after a passed ball advanced him to second, Riley Evan's sacrifice bunt moved Almond to third. Adams was then hit by a pitch and Riley Sands brought home Almond on sacrifice fly. Marsell capped the scoring in the inning with a double off the center field wall to bring home courtesy runner Braxton Leon. After Zionsville scored four in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-5, the Mavs added a key insurance run in the top of the seventh. With two outs and no body on, Evans and Adams both earned walks to set the table for a Owen Smith single to left that pushed the lead to 8-5. Riley Sands was solid in his first start the season going 3.2 innings with no earned runs while striking out four. Aiden Riser earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief giving up two runs while striking out one. The Mavs return to action Tuesday in Kokomo as they start a midweek series with the Wildkats. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 pm at Kokomo Municipal Stadium located at 400 S Union St, Kokomo, IN 46901.
