The Mavs scored twice with two outs in the first inning, then broke the game open late with an eight-run sixth to secure a victory over Danville on Wednesday night. The win allows the Mavs to claim a Sagamore Conference title in their first year in the league. The championship marks the program’s 18th conference title. The Mavs got on the board with three hits in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Riley started the inning with a one-out single to right, followed by a Jake Winger double that brought Riley home. Brodyn Sharp then singled up the middle to score courtesy runner Kasen Koch. Winger earned the win on the mound, going six innings and allowing just four hits with no runs or walks while striking out three. The senior right-hander needed only 74 pitches for the complete-game shutout. The Mavs sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning. A Sharp double started the rally, and after a walk to Jackson Lancaster, back-to-back bunt singles by Zayne Newgent and Deacon Anthrop brought home the first run of the inning. The final blow came from Lancaster, who delivered a two-run triple to right-center to cap the scoring. The Mavs continue their homestand Thursday as they welcome the North Central Panthers to the Mav Baseball Complex for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. The Mavs will also host their MYB teams for the second consecutive night.
