The Lady Mavs took to the court for their first game of the season last night, and they started with a tough road matchup versus the previously undefeated Lady Gophers (5-0) of Clinton Prairie. Coming off of a long two-week layoff, Coach Knoy was expecting some rust early on from his team. However, the Mavericks showed up with a lot of energy and jumped out to a fast 11 – 5 lead; spurring a quick timeout from the Gophers.
The Lady Mavs used a full-court zone press combined with tenacious on the ball defense from the back-court duo of senior DayLynn Thornton and junior Teresa Maggio to force the Gophers into 20 turnovers for the game. Maggio picked a number of pockets that led to several fast-break layups. Maggio led all scorers with 26 points and tallied 10 steals. Thornton also scored in double figures adding 11 points for the Lady Mavs.
Sophomore Caitlyn Miller was the team’s leading rebounder, pulling in 8 boards off the glass. In the end, the Lady Mavs walked off the court with a great 53 – 37 road victory!
The JV Lady Mavs also secured a win on Thursday night vs the Gophers, with a thrilling 51-48 overtime victory. Freshman Haylee Smith led the team with a career-high 11 points
