Multiple Teams · Monday Morning Mav Round-Up!

The weather couldn’t have been scripted any better for the first full weekend of the Fall season.  While COVID-19 has wreaked havoc with cancellations and postponements, at least the forecasts have continually been cooperative. This past Friday and Saturday, the varsity Mavs had zero home events, so the Mavs loaded up their buses and headed out to compete in conference, tournament, and post-season play.   Here’s a quick recap of all the action:

The McCutcheon football team (2-4) was coming off its first win of the year and was looking to start a win-streak when they traveled down to historic Longshore Stadium to face the Arsenal Tech Titans (2-3).  It was a competitive game throughout the night and showcased some fantastic playmaking by both teams.  The attacking Maverick defense came up big again, only allowing 2 touchdowns, as the Mavs took the road win 20-12.  Sophomore Ethan Smith went 17-26 for 161 yards and 2 TD’s on the night.  On the receiving end, senior Josh Garcia (6 rec 65 yds) and Junior Brody Fine (6 rec 54 yds) led the Mavs.  Fine and Sophomore Kam Little (1 rec 16 yds) each hauled in touchdown catches.  Sophomore running back, Brad Gagnon, put in another yeoman’s effort with 29 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown behind a dominant performance from the Offensive line.

The Mavs travel again this Friday to tackle a familiar foe, the Harrison Raiders.  Kickoff is set for 7 PM and tickets are online presale only (

The Lady Mavs had a busy week besting Brownsburg, Kokomo, Logansport prior to Saturday’s Crown Point Invitational.  In pool play at Saturday’s invite, McCutcheon didn’t drop a set with wins over Goshen (25-13; 25-20) and Bishop Noll (25-15; 25-18).  In the Semi-Finals the Lady Mavs remained unblemished on the day defeating Lawrence North in straight sets (25-22; 25-20).

The championship round match-up was McCutcheon vs the host, #4 Crown Point Bulldogs.  After dropping the 1st set (18-25), the Lady Mavs evened the match with a second set win (25-22).  With the best-out-of-3 invitational format, the Bulldogs pulled out the win over the defending champion Mavs (10-15).

In the championship match, sophomore Chloe Chicoine (18 | 39%) and freshman Bella Humphrey (9 | 50%) led the Mavs in Kills.  Senior middles, Natalie Bonilla (3) and Sheridan Phillips (2) tallied the team’s blocks at the net.  Chicoine (19), Humphrey (10), and sophomore Emmy Frier (8) led the team in Digs.  Freshman Allie Shondell dealt out 24 assists.

Next up for the Lady Mavs is a road match tomorrow vs #10 Avon.  Tickets are online presale only (

Girls Golf

The Lady Mavs golfers earned a trip to Saturday’s Regional for the 2nd year in a row.  The Mavs headed to Battleground Golf club to test their skills versus one of the toughest fields in the State.  Senior Kayci Barker (101) and sophomore Marlee Matz (101) led the Mavs’ scoring en route to a 416 team score and a 16th place finish.  Junior Hannah Heimbach (105), senior Abigail Talcott (109), and sophomore Ellie Rose (117) rounded out the scoring.  While the Mavs didn’t finish as high as they would’ve liked, they ended the season proud of their development and accomplishments.

Great season ladies!

Girls Soccer

The Lady Mavs Soccer team found themselves playing their first match out of their 2nd quarantine of the season.  It’s been a tough season for the Lady Mavs, who were only playing their 3rd match of the year down at Plainfield high school this past Saturday.  While some rust would be expected after a two-week quarantine, the Lady Mavs impressed everyone with their stout play.  McCutcheon found themselves in a defensive battle that only saw the Lady Mavs fire 4-Shots on Goal (Allysa Gray – 2, Shelby Crowe – 1, Megan Brigham – 1).  McCutcheon’s senior Keeper, Olivia Smith, brought her “A-Game” as she tallied 10 saves to lock the Lady Mavs into a 0 – 0 tie vs the Quakers.

The Lady Mavs have a loaded schedule this week with matches vs Jeff, Tri-West, and Western. Information about tickets to these events has been shared through Final Forms.  Good luck this week, Lady Mavs!
