Multiple Teams · Maverick Weekend Round-Up

It was a great weekend to be a Mav, with several outstanding team and individual performances by McCutcheon student-athletes.  With all of our Winter sports teams on the road, it was the perfect weekend to fire up your favorite playlist or podcast and hit the highways of central Indiana to see your Mavs!  Here’s a quick breakdown of all the action:

Swim & Dive (Boys/Girls)

The outstanding McCutcheon Swim & Dive team took to the beautiful pool of Crawfordsville High School for one of their last tune-ups before Sectionals.  It was a very competitive field for the 25th annual Athenian Invite, but the Mavs came ready and focused on improving their season-best times during the two-day event.  Here’s the list of McCutcheon’s 1st place finishers:

With their dominance in the relays and depth at a number of events, the Boys and the Girls Swim and Dive teams both won the team titles at this year’s Athenian Invite!  The JV swimmers will host their Finale this Saturday (2.1.20) at 9 AM, and the Boys will travel to Southmont HS on Feb 4th.  The Girls will travel to Zionsville on Feb 7th & 8th for their chance to compete for a Sectional title.  Good luck in the weeks to come for our Maverick Swimmers and Divers!

Girls Basketball

The Lady Mavs Basketball (11-11) team took the long road trip to Anderson to take on the Indians (12-9).  The Lady Mavs were slow to get started, trailing 16-5 after the 1st quarter.  The Lady Mavs scored no less than 15 points per quarter the rest of the way, but couldn’t overcome that early 11 point deficit.  Also troublesome for the Mavs was Anderson small forward, Tyra Ford.  The talented junior dropped 35 pts (12-25 FG) on the Mavs.  The Lady Mavs were also led by good guard play.  Freshman Caitlyn Miller was hot the last 3 quarters of the game, getting to the rim to score 14 of her team high 22 points in the paint.  Junior Daylynn Thornton also reached double digits, scoring 11 for the Lady Mavs

Next up for Coach Knoy’s squad is a short trip across the Wabash on Tuesday (1.28) to take on the West Lafayette Red Devils.  The JV Lady Mavs tip at 6 PM with the Varsity to follow in WL’s Berberian Gym.

Wrestling

The Maverick wrestlers loaded up the bus and headed to Richmond HS, the host of this year’s NCC Championships.  The Mavs were the first team warming up on the mats, showing their readiness for the event.  With an incredibly deep field of wrestling talent, it was a big challenge for Coach Adam Metzger’s squad.

Reaching the finals for the second year in a row, junior Spencer Phillips was set to claim the 170 lbs title, but faced a strong wrestler from Anderson.  Joining Phillips in the finals round was junior Mason Toth.  Toth faced a familiar foe in Sowders from Lafayette Jeff.  After gutty performances from both juniors, and from the rest of the Maverick squad, the Mavericks placed 4th in the team totals.  S. Phillips was the lone champion on the day, cementing All-NCC honors!

Next up for the Maverick wrestlers is Sectionals this Saturday at Lafayette Jeff’s Marion Crawley Gymnasium.  Come out to support your Mavs and cheer them onto the next round of the IHSAA State Tournament.  Go Mavs!

Gymnastics

The McCutcheon Gymnastics team hosted the McCutcheon Invite at our local Elite Gymnastics this past Saturday.  The 9-team event included some very talented gymnasts, but the Lady Mavericks held their own, placing a close 2nd (102.925) behind the winning Harrison team (107.92).  Here’s a breakdown of how the Lady Mavs placed on each event:
