Monday night was a perfect night to honor the Class of ’20 with their leadership and talents on full display in several events. Boys Soccer and Boys Tennis enjoyed Senior Night victories, while the Lady Golfers competed in Sectional and the Lady Mavs soccer team traveled to HSE. Here’s a breakdown of all the action:
The Maverick Tennis team didn’t have to wait long after school to compete with an early 4:30 start vs the Central Catholic Knights. Seniors John Shambaugh, Joe Sanson, Juan Ayala-Rios, Mgr Vanessa Hetzel and Mgr Olivia Alkire were acknowledged by their peers for their commitment to the program and for their leadership throughout the season. Their families were also on hand, sharing in the Senior Night festivities. The good vibes continued throughout the evening as the Mavs had a clean sweep (5-0) victory over their crosstown rivals. After the match, the McCutcheon Tennis team headed to Pizza King for some slices and continued fellowship. Way to go Seniors!
The Girls Golf team had an even earlier start to their match, as Sectional #5 at beautiful Coyote Crossing Golf Course, was slated for an 11 AM tee time. To earn a bid to this Saturday’s Regional, teams must finish in the top 3 overall, and the top 3 individual scores not from those teams will also move on. The girls teed off knowing that it would take their best efforts to keep playing into the post-season, and that’s exactly what they delivered. The team was lead by junior #5 Kayci Barker who fired a personal best 99 on the day! Kayci’s score was doubley important as if there is a tie, the teams’ fifth score would be the deciding tiebreaker. As it was, Harrison (362) and Jeff (382) had already punched their Regional tickets, but the Mavs (412) were locked in a tie with Clinton Central (412). In the end, the Mavs earned the right to play Regionals this Saturday at Battleground Golf Club. Way to show that #MavPRIDE!
McCutcheon Sectional Scores: Sarah Spalding (104), Hanna Miller (105), Hannah Heimbach (111), Madison Matz (104), Kayci Barker (99); Team Total 412
The Boys Soccer team celebrated their Seniors in a match vs the Crawfordsville Athenians. The Mavs have really started to put it together as of late, improving their record to 7-6 overall and finished a perfect 5-0 at home! It was clear that the Athenians were overmatched, with the Mavs controlling possession for most of the match. The Mavs fired 11 corners, 12 shots on goal, and connected on 7 of those for a 7-to-nil Senior Night shutout! Emilio Trujillo and Evan Holmes totaled 3 saves in the net for the Mavs. Next up for the Boys Soccer team is the NCC tournament this Saturday at Kokomo.
Goals: Evan Holmes, Josh Persin, Tyler Raplee, Marco Carillo, Joel Jarrett, Cruz Mitcham, Carlos Diaz
The Lady Mavs (6-5-3) soccer team headed to Hamilton Southeastern for a tough match-up vs the Royals (13-1). The Mavs found themselves on the defensive side of the ball for most of the night, as the team speed of HSE was tough to overcome. The Lady Mavs fought hard and had chances to score, but in the end, fell short in a 5-0 loss. The Girls will head back to the practice pitch to train for Saturday’s NCC Tournament at Kokomo.
