Thursday night was another jammed pack night of IHSAA action for Maverick athletics! Here’s a quick round-up of the highlights and results from 9/5/19:
Girls’ Golf: The Mavs split their match with North Montgomery– 221 and Southmont- 167. The ladies shot their best team score 188 tonight on a great evening at the Ravines Golf Course. Sarah Spalding 44, Hannah Heimbach 45 and Madison Matz 49 all had personal best tonight. Hanna Miller’s 51 rounded out the 188 tally. Congrats to Southmont’s Logan Berrisford on shooting even-par 36 and earning medalist honors.
Boys’ Tennis: The Mavericks hosted Kokomo, and sent the Wildkats home with a 3-2 loss. The Singles made a clean sweep of the evening with #1 Gavin Dardeen (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and #2 John Shambaugh (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) shaking off slow starts to secure two points for the Mavs. Senior #3 Joe Sanson (6-2, 6-0) continued his hot start to the season making quick work of his opponent in straight sets. #1 Doubles Finn and Connor Devlin (1-6, 1-6) couldn’t get their magic going vs a talented Kokomo duo. #2 Doubles Jake O’Donnell and Gavri Nodalo (4-6, 5-7) competed well, but came up short in a couple games to lose in straight sets.
Boys’ Soccer: The Mavs Soccer team traveled across the bridge over to West Lafayette HS to face a fast and athletic Red Devil squad. The Red Devils scored early and often, taking a commanding 4-1 lead into the half. The Mavs had runs to try and level the scoring, but never found the back of the net in the 2nd half. The final score ended with a 5-1 Maverick loss.
The JV team won 3-1! Cruz Mitchum (2) and Jeovani Banuelos (1) accounted for the JV Mav scoring.
Volleyball: It was a pumped up crowd that inhabited Resler Gymnasium, as the Lady Mavs played host to NCC rival Lafayette Jeff Bronchos. DJ Joe Sheets was on hand to keep the crowd hyped and vibing during the quick 3-0 match. The Mavs were in control the whole match and used their precision and power to overwhelm the Bronchos in straight sets (25-4, 25-9, 25-18). Senior Brooke Humphrey and Frosh Chloe Chicoine electrified the crowed with a combined 23 kills. Humphrey and Senior Kailee Cornell combined for 8 aces on the night, and Cornell and Junior Kinsey Williams tallied 30 of the team’s 38 assists. Chicoine and Junior Briann Robinson added 13 digs for the Mavs.
Brooke Humphrey was also honored Thursday night for recording her 1000th dig vs Clinton Prairie. The Michigan bound senior continues to add to her individual honors, but it’s her leadership and committment to the team’s goals that make her an example for all young Mavericks to aspire to. Congrats Brooke!
The JV and Frosh teams both swept their Broncho opponents as well, highlighting a dominant night for Coach Sutter’s program.
