1st Set (25 – 10), 2nd Set (25-17), 3rd Set (25-10)
Different road opponent. Same Result. The 3rd-ranked Lady Mavs Volleyball team traveled across the mighty Wabash Tuesday night, to take on the Red Devils of West Lafayette HS. The road-tested Mavs (9-0) faced a youthful, but talented, West Lafayette squad (7-1). The excitement for the rivalry match was evident by the lively home crowd that was present.
However, the home crowd excitement started to wane as the Red Devils soon realized, during the 1st set, that there was a reason the Lady Mavs have amassed an undefeated record. The power hitters of Senior Brooke Humphry, Freshman Chloe Chicoine, Junior Natalie Bonilla, and Sophomore Lauren Watson showed up in force leading an outstanding team total of 43 kills. The 14.3 kills/set was a season-best total and kept the Red Devils on the defensive all night. Setter Kailee Cornell was busy at work, dealing out 35 assists; adding to an already impressive +1000 career total.
When West Lafayette did try to bring the heat themselves; Seniors Emily Brown, Carli Leonard, and Frosh Chicoine led the Mavs to a team total of 40 digs for the match.
Up next for the Lady Mavs is their first home match of the year vs Clinton Prairie (3-6). The Mavs host the Gophers tonight (9/4) in Resler Gymnasium. The JV match starts @ 6:00 PM, with the varsity to follow. The Freshman Volleyball team will take on Harrison in the Aux gym @ 6:00 PM as well.
