Girls Soccer Sectional Champs!

Congratulations to our Lady Mav Soccer Team as they defeated Harrison 1-0 in the sectional final Saturday night!

From Sam King, J&C:

WEST LAFAYETTE – How hard is it to beat a team three times in a season?

Just ask the Harrison girls soccer team.

McCutcheon knocked off the Raiders 1-0 to claim the Class 3A sectional championship at Harrison Saturday night.

Harrison had beaten McCutcheon 4-0 early in the season and 3-2 in the North Central Conference championship game two weeks ago.

"This was our third game of the year with them and there were no surprises on both sides," McCutcheon coach Branko Isailovic said. "These girls know each other. I am very proud of my team and the way they showed up tonight. They wanted to play soccer. My team played exceptionally well with the energy. They didn't give an inch."

The teams warmed up in driving rain and then the start of the game was delayed for 40 minutes due to lighting. The teams were sent to the locker rooms and then given 15 minutes to warm up before the game started.

"You never know how something like that will affect a team," Isailovic said. "I thought our team handled it well."

Neither team could mount much of an offense in the first half. The only score came on a corner kick that McCutcheon's Halle Neibert knocked into the net.

"It came over their back defensive line and I headed the ball," Neibert said. "It bounced off the goalie and I just put it in. I knew I had to get it in."

That proved to be the only goal of the night. Harrison outshot McCutcheon 6-2 but could not get anything past McCutcheon goalie Autumn Hogue.

"I just had to stay focused," Hogue said. "It was a little freaky in the last 10 minutes when the team needs you. We were ready to come back and beat Harrison after losing to them twice. I think we just wanted this more."

The majority of Harrison's shots on goal came in the second half.

"We played timid in the first half," Harrison coach Katie Bittner said. "It seemed like we were afraid of letting them score and were not attacking. We were not as aggressive as we usually are. I think it was a little bit of nerves, sectional and you want to win but you don't want them to score. We were giving them a lot of respect."

The closest Harrison came to scoring was with 10 minutes left when Olivia Geswein's shot outside of the box bounced off the top bar and away.

"We came out a lot stronger in the second half," Bittner said. "We had more chances but it came down to we couldn't find the back of the net and they did. It is hard to beat a team three times and I think a lot of it came down to us being confident but nervous and we did not play to our strengths."

The loss was only Harrison's third of the season.

"Harrison has a heck of a team and Katie has done a great job with them in her first year," Isailovic said. "We made a few adjustments. They almost worked in Kokomo at the NCC. We are just a work in progress. I knew we would be young this year. As the season went on, we progressed and got better and where we needed to be at the end of the season which counts the most.

"We just knew what we needed to do and everybody stepped up and did their job."

McCutcheon will play next Saturday in the regional at Logansport.
