A long-time Tippecanoe School Corporation teacher and coach was honored Saturday morning during a ceremony at the McCutcheon cross country course.
Norman Beets, who coached the Mavericks' girls cross country team from 1985 to 2005, now has part of the course named in his honor. Beets Hill, which runs adjacent to S. 18th Street, is marked by a sign. Beets helped create the current course at Wea Ridge Middle School.
During his tenure, Beets coached a number of all-conference runners, one of whom, Trisha Burris, was named All-State in 1985.
Beets taught math at Southwestern and McCutcheon for 36 years until he retired in 2009. He was also instrumental in developing the middle school cross country club feeder programs.
