The McCutcheon Boys Golf team opened its season April 11 with a match against Twin Lakes at its home course, the Ravines. The Mavs won 165 to 172. The JV team also won 199-202.
Head Coach Josh Frauhiger, in his third season with the Mavs, has a 12-player roster that includes two seniors and plenty of talent from returning players. “We lost three key components to our sectional roster last year, but look to reload and get stronger quickly this season,” says Frauhiger. “There is a lot of potential in this group.”
Coach Frauhiger expects his two seniors to create a great foundation for the year. Spencer Craft has played number one since freshman year, is a two-time regional qualifier and shot 80 last year in sectionals. Jarrett Rhine was on the sectional team as a sophomore and looks to return to form.
Junior James Sanders just missed the sectional roster last year and looks to prove he is one of the most improved players in the area after shooting a 70 in the city tournament. Sophomore Jeffery Cook was a regional qualifier last year with a 78 at sectionals. He appeared in nearly all varsity matches as a freshman and looks to make some noise as a sophomore golfer this year.
Coach Frauhiger says Juniors Jalen Barker and Brett Hartman, along with sophomore Dylan Dexter, look to compete on the varsity level. They’ve worked hard in the offseason and their early practice round scores are showing it.
In addition, sophomores Michael Skadberg and Rowen Farrell are multi-sport athletes who have decided to give golf a try. Louie Wendall looks to improve on a solid freshman year, while juniors Cole Ford and Jed Smeltz are newcomers to the team showing a lot of potential.
Pete Osterman and Chris Skronski are serving as assistant coaches for the team.
